Happy 30th birthday to the World Wide Web!

So today marks the 30th birthday of the World Wide Web, one of the most notorious inventions to ever exist!

In 1989 March 12th, Tim Berners-Lee a British Engineer and Computer Scientist proposed his idea of the World Wide Web. Before 1989, society didn’t know any different from sending letters, using a dictionary to find out how to correctly spell something and shopping meant always venturing out of the house.

Here is his actual proposal…

His Manager came back and said ‘Vague but exciting…’ little did he know it would be one of the best inventions of all time!

The World Wide Web may be thirty but doesn’t it feels like we’ve always had it? We now have generations that grow up surrounded by ‘www’ and will never know the pains of a dialling tone or worse still using an encyclopedia.

Even though the world wide web has accomplished things that 30 years people would have never dreamed of today it faces serious hurdles. Including, data breaches, security threats and fundamental rights.

Similarly to the majority of technological inventions, the world wide web garnered some scepticism. Robert Metcalfe, inventor of the Ethernet predicted that the internet would have collapsed by 1996, and here we are 23 years later! In 1995, technology guru Bill Gates was unsure whether the Internet would take off to the extent it has today, but two years later was sold on the idea and is now regarded by some as the ‘prince of the world wide web’.

A lot of jobs use the internet, it is actually hard to think of a company who doesn’t including a doctor’s office, a shop, a school, office work, a cinema, a bank, and so much more! Creating opportunity for people lifes to be that much easier and efficient in the way we work today.

The World Wide Web lets everyone learn about information across the world… so what have we all been googling:

  • Top 3 Searches: World Cup, Avicii, Mac Miller
  • Top 3 News: World Cup, Hurricane Florence, Mega Millions Result
  • Top 3 People: Meghan Markle, Demi Lovato, Sylvester Stallone
  • Top 3 Movies: Black Panther, Deadpool 2, Venom

So without the internet a lot of people wouldn’t know what was constantly happening.
